IBS in Children: Symptoms and Treatment

What is IBS and how is it treated in children?

Irritable bowel syndrome is a problem of nerves that surround the intestines. These nerves that surround the intestines are normally responsible for transmitting sensory information to the brain (afferent nerves) and stimulating intestinal movement (efferent nerves). When explained in this way – it’s easy then to understand why people with with IBS primarily have amplified pain and abnormal bowel movements. Some people have diarrhea predominant IBS, or IBS-D. Others have constipation predominant, or IBS-C. Others, have alternating diarrhea and constipation. Almost all individuals with IBS have symptoms of pain, gas and bloating. As previously mentioned – IBS is an issue of nerves. It comes as no surprise then that IBS can be triggered by stress and anxiety as nerves from the brain can transmit signals to the intestines that may amplify symptoms of pain and discomfort.

There is no specific test for diagnosing IBS. Children with IBS typically must satisfy a list of common symptoms. A pediatric gastroenterologist may order additional testing including blood and stool tests, endoscopy and colonocopy to make sure your child does not have something other than IBS.

Treatment of IBS children is focused on avoiding trigger foods. A food diary may help patients figure out which foods make their symptoms better or worse. Improved soluble fiber may help with symptoms of diarrhea by bulking up stools. Insoluble fiber may help with soft stools in those who have constipation. Medicines known as “anti-spasmodics” may help with cramping and pain – as may certain oils such as peppermint oil. Antibiotics and probiotics may help with symptoms of gas and bloating. Our own SproutedBiome probiotic has been shown to improve symptoms of IBS.
